â· Sewall-Belmont House & Museum. You might find yourself humming âSister Suffragetteâ from Mary PoppinsââWeâre clearly soldiers in petticoats, and dauntless crusaders for womenâs votesââas you tour this museum. This Federal/Queen Anneâstyle house was once the home of Alice Paul (1885â1977), who founded the National Womenâs Party in 1913 and wrote the original Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution (ERA). Paul, who held three law degrees and a Ph.D. in sociology, was jailed seven times in the U.S. and Great Britain for the cause of womenâs suffrage. Paul lived here from 1929 to 1972, but now the National Womenâs Party owns and maintains the house. Former President Barack Obama designated it a National Monument in 2016. Exhibitions trace the path of the womenâs movement, from the better-known activist Susan B. Anthony, to 59¢ buttons and the ERA. Check out picketing banners, 5,000 prints and photographs, original cartoons, more than 50 scrapbooks from early suffragists, paintings, sculptures, publications, and more. 1 hr. 144 Constitution Ave. NE. www.nps.gov/bepa/index.htm. â 202/546-1210. Free admission. Open for tours FriâSun 10amâ5pm.
⸠â â Folger Shakespeare Library. Founded in 1932 by ardent Shakespeare fan (and wealthy Standard Oil executive) Henry Clay Folger and his wife, Emily, this repository houses the worldâs largest collection of the Bardâs printed works. In addition to its 160,000 booksâmany of which are classified as rareâthe library also provides an important research center for students of the master playwright and Renaissance literature. After an extensive multi-year renovation, the Shakespeare Exhibition Hall reopened in 2024 with new expanded exhibits, including some of Shakespeareâs treasured First Folios. Outdoors, the revitalized garden has a fountain and Juliet balcony. 45 min. 201 E. Capitol St. SE. www.folger.edu. â 202/544-7077. Free admission. MonâSat 10amâ5pm, Sun from noon. Free walk-in tours MonâSat 11am, 1pm, and 3pm, and on Sun noon and 3pm. Closed federal holidays.
